Simi’s “Christmas House” Founder Passes Away

IRIS SMOOT/Acorn Newspapers END OF AN ERA - Local residents gather for a vigil at the home of John Becker, whose wife Phyllis passed away on Sunday, March 16. Phyllis Becker started decorating their Sycamore Drive home for Christmas 49 years ago and as the decorations became more elaborate, taking over the yard and driveway, it became a community landmark.

Head Shaving Support for Tyler Thompson

IRIS SMOOT/Acorn Newspapers SHAVING TO SUPPORT - St. Rose of Lima Catholic School first grader Drake Sakamoto, 7, squeals with laughter as school parent Steve Beausang gives him a close buzz during a head-shaving event for students and staff to show their support for sixth grader Tyler Thompson,  who has lost his hair from undergoing chemotherapy, at the school on Friday, March 14. The money raised from the event will be donated to the Thompson family to help with Tyler's medical costs.

Students Perform Shakespearean Comedy



IRIS SMOOT/Acorn Newspapers SHAKESPEARE FOR A CAUSE - Westlake High School students Mike Ghaussy, left, and Rei Vardi perform a scene from “Romeo and Juliet” during “The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged),” a play they produced and starred in with fellow student Kevin Shi on Sunday, March 9 to benefit the Westminster Free Clinic. The play, which was not part of the school’s drama department, was self-funded by the students.

West Coast Elite Dance Championship



IRIS SMOOT/Acorn Newspapers PASSIONATE MOVEMENT - Calabasas High School student dancers perform in the Elite group category at the West Coast Elite Dance regional dance competition at Westlake High School on Saturday, February 8. Over 300 dancers from 12 schools competed in groups and solos throughout the day, with the hopes of making it to the state championship.

Soldier Surprises His Family



IRIS SMOOT/Acorn Newspapers WHERE’S LEO? - Lauren Creger and her brothers Luke, 14 and Quinn, 16, pose for a photo with Santa at The Oaks mall as their father, Navy Commander Leo Creger, hops in for a photobomb during a surprise on Saturday, December 21. Creger was in Bahrain for a planned 10-month deployment, and found out in November that he would be finishing his deployment before Christmas. He told only his wife Beth, who contacted The Oaks and planned the surprise appearance for her children.

The effort is coordinated by three rotary clubs in Simi - Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise, Simi Valley and Simi Sunset - and the bicycles will go to children whose families could not afford them.

Memorial service for dancer and choreographer Patsy Swayze

Dancer, choreographer and longtime Simi Valley resident Patsy Swayze, mother of actor Patrick Swayze, passed away on September 18 at age 86. A memorial service for friends and family was held at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center on Saturday, November 9. See the full story in the Simi Valley Acorn.

Alderman began studying dance with Swayze starting at age 8 in Houston, and has taught dance for over 30 years.
